Hit Those High Notes - Week One!

Hi everyone!

Welcome to Week One of our High Notes intensive - if you've yet to hit that high C, maybe this is the week you'll do it, and if you're already up there, we're going to work on some consistency of tone!

In the video I share with you all of my fingerings and some tips for practicing this week's exercise, which is a series of long tones in the top register, reaching up towards that high C.

I *know* that long tones are a little bit boring, but this is the best way to increase your endurance - but I also hope that my fingerings work for you!

Your work:

* practice at a forte dynamic (sorry neighbors!)

* try to stretch a little higher each day if you can

* record your longtones for us to hear, and...

* cheer on the other participants!

If you're having any trouble and want some help, please just leave me a comment here in the forum, I will be around all week to help you out. You can post a video to show me, or just describe your issue!

Next week we've got a few technical exercises for improving finger dexterity in this register (it's tough, the fingerings are a little strange up there), but for now we just want to work on a nice, clear, loud sound all the way to the top of the clarinet's register.

Here's the PDF of the exercise and the fingerings:

What fingering do you use for the F sharp?

I'm getting back into clarinet playing after a 23-year hiatus. I am fairly sure I used to be able to play higher, but right now I am up to F.

hi Erika, here is my most used f# - there are quite a few possibilities so if this one doesn't work for you there are more, if you go to the page in the forum called "outside tonebase resources" there's a link to a fingering chart website, he probably has 10 f# fingerings!

I don't always include that Eb key at the bottom, depends on intonation

It works, thank you! I can get up to G# (using your fingerings) but when I try for A, my pitch drops. I have to work on my voicing.
