Left Hand Dexterity Challenge: Week Three!
Welcome to Week Three!
Now the focus shifts to larger movements — specifically the leap from C♯ to B♭. It’s a big one, and it can throw the left hand out of balance if we don’t approach it with care.
The exercises this week approach the interval from both directions, so you’ll get a thorough workout. One thing to experiment with: when you practise the leap slowly, try keeping some fingers down — for example, the C♯ key and the ring finger — while you move to B♭. This can help stabilise the hand and stop the fingers from lifting too far away.
Key interval: C♯ ↔ B♭.
Method: practise slowly, keep fingers close, and experiment with which ones you leave down for support.
Connection to last week: it builds on the B♭–E “slide” motion we explored, but now adds more fingers into the equation.
Goal: smooth, stable leaps where the air and tone remain steady, and the hand doesn’t collapse or fly away.
Take your time — this is one of those spots where slow, mindful work really pays off when you later want to move quickly and cleanly.
