Low Register Speed Challenge: Week One

Hi everyone! Welcome to the first week of the challenge. The PDF for the whole challenge is above, and this week we are working on exercises 1+2.

The trick with all of these, while using the metronome, is not to "bounce" with your metronome beats but try to see the lines as long even as you're using your "best friend" the metronome to help you work on tempo.

I would write in that day's metronome at the top of each exercise (you can see I've done a little example on the PDF) and then cross it out as you move up, so that you can see your progress over the course of the week.

Please (unless you use your phone as your metronome) keep your metronome on when you post your videos - and share with us what metronome marking you started at and where you got to so that we can all cheer you on :)

For exercise 1:

  • Set your initial metronome speed at something like 50 - although you may find it easier to put it on 100 and have two clicks per beat, then working your speed up to about 120 before you half the metronome to make it 60 again.
  • The 5 markings under each B signify our middle B fingering and Galper also suggests the left hand low E, which I would choose unless you are already left handed - if you, like me, are right handed, you will have a tendency to choose the right hand low E and it's good to shake things up!
  • The Ebs in the first line make this tricky for coordination - good luck!

Exercise 2:

  • Maybe start with an initial metronome marking of 60 (it doesn't matter how slow you start, as long as you're using the metronome and tracking your progress!)
  • Watch the key signature on this one - again we have challenging Ebs coming into focus here

Please post your videos by Sunday so that I can offer you feedback! It will also be great to come back and watch these week 1 videos when we come back to Exercises 1/2 in Week Four!

Here’s the result of my initial time with these two classics on Tuesday evening! #1 is at 66 bpm and #2 is at 76. I noticed when listening: it’s really easy to discern when I get anxious because I rush!

Katherine, you have such a great sound in that low register, I love it - and really smooth technique. I know what you mean about 'mood' dictating tempo fluctuations - what would we do without our metronomes...

Here's my exercise one at metronome 100, which I suppose is 50bpm. I tend to jump on the throat A early and then have to even back out with the clicks. Something to watch.

The implied harmony here is fun - I particularly enjoy the diminished chord and the move from G7 to C. On to number two!

I love your comment about implied harmonies - absolutely! Well done.

I play E flat clarinet not nearly often enough, need to get ready for something this weekend on it, have “bad aim” in consequence - so used the etudes as tonight’s warmup. #1 at 72 and #2 at 84.

I have some work on contra coming up, maybe I should do these on that beast - then we'd have the full spread of clarinets :)
