One of the really unique features of the clarinet - something other wind instruments cannot do - is that it can start notes “from nothing” in all of its registers. This contributes to the clarinet’s ultimate power to blend with other instruments. However: it doesn’t mean that starting from nothing is easy to do! So in this workshop, I'm going show you some tricks for how to practice this beautiful way of playing.

If you want to improve your sound, work on your blending or build more control with the clarinet - this is the workshop for you!

At the end of the livestream, I’ll also show you how these exercises work on the bass clarinet - so if you’re learning to play bass, stick around!

I've also attached a PDF to this post with some excerpts we'll be looking at!

For any bass clarinet players out there (i.e.  ), I'm going to be talking about how these exercises can be applied to the bass and I will have my bass clarinet around - so if you have specific bass questions this is a great moment to ask them - I will answer as many questions as we have time for, but it would also help to give me an idea of how many bass clarinet players we have in the community and whether I should do some bass-centric livestreams. I love bass a lot so I'd definitely like to do it if there's the interest!

Interesting set of exercises; not something I've ever tried, so thanks.  In "real life", I find it helpful to start the airstream half a second before my entrance and rather than actively tongue, just interrupt the air lightly with my tongue and I can maintain the quietude better.
