Join Heather Roche as she helps you build a vocabulary of altissimo fingerings for the clarinet. Work on your range, leaps, tuning and color options in this challenging register. Bring your clarinet to class and let's get squeaky!

In this live stream, we'll start with two different warmups - some long tones and bugle calls - to help get you ready for some altissimo practice. And then we'll move chromatically up from our high C#, talking about different fingering possibilities and why you might choose one over the other. I'll bring some examples from studies, arpeggios and repertoire so that you can get a sense of just how useful it is to have an arsenal of fingerings at your disposal.

Questions for you:

  • Are there any notes in the altissimo where you don't have a stable and consistent fingering?
  • Is there a piece you're learning that uses altissimo notes and you're not sure which one to use?

Feel free to post your questions here - I'll be sure to address them - even if you're not free for the live stream and you watch it later I'll do my best to make sure everyone's questions are answered!

I’ve been working on my altissimo for a while since I was at one point afraid of any note above D.  I can now comfortably play up to the F#, and am working on going up to A.  I feel that those notes, G, G# and A, don’t quite have good intonation.  I’d like to get at least a solid G for my practice on the Weber.  So any advice on G and above would be great.  My next question is how high do we go? Technically is there a limit? My instructor said she really never goes above A as an assistant principal in her orchestra, but I’m sure some styles (eg Jazz, modern solo works) really push the upper limits of the clarinet.  I’d love to listen to your thoughts on this.

We are definitely going to discuss THE FEAR :)

But I've made a note of all your other questions too, all good ones!

Hi Barry! Welcome to tonebase clarinet!! We did start on time - sometimes the page needs refreshing once you've gone to the tonebase live player - the link was at the top of this forum post. Did you manage to get in to watch it? You can also watch them after they've played, anytime - and I'm happy to answer questions if you have any!
