What other instruments do you play?

This week, I’d love to hear about what other instruments you play! Whether it’s the piano, the guitar, or maybe you double on another wind instrument, sometimes playing other instruments can actually help us to understand the clarinet better. Has that been the case for you?

I play the piano (quite badly) and a little bit of alto saxophone, which I picked up during the pandemic, although I don't have too much time for it now. I'd really like to learn the basics of a non-fretted string instrument, as I think it would help me think about intonation in a different way.

Your turn!

In high school I played alto saxophone in the jazz band and began my study of flute. I actually was going to major in flute while in college, and was accepted into three music programs. I studied art instead. Cut to the recent past. After seminary and ordination, I began private study of the flute. I used the flute in my hospital ministry and played in a community band. During Covid and a brief hospitalization, I focused on playing clarinet, which was my first instrument. I studied briefly with a university instructor and switched to playing clarinet in the community band five years ago. I find it easier to control my breathing on clarinet as I played it throughout school in the band. Also, I find the clarinet band parts more interesting to play than the flute parts.
