Whether you’ve always wanted to learn, you’re just getting started, or you want to improve your bass clarinet playing: this livestream is for you! We’re going to be exploring how to get a great sound on the bass clarinet, how to make that difficult second register speak, and I’ll be sharing some great exercises, studies, and pieces to inspire you to take your bass playing to the next level!

Feel free to attach your questions or images of scores you're working on if there's a tricky bass passage that you'd like help with!

Hi everyone - I'm so sorry but I'm ill so I'm going to have to postpone today's livestream!

Sorry to hear that, get well soon!
When you have a chance to reschedule, I'd be really interested in your perspective on embouchure differences with Bb and bass. I find I get mouth fatigue a lot faster on bass, but this may be because I don't play it enough?

Hi Sarah - hm, interesting - perhaps you are introducing some kind of tension into your bass playing. It might be not playing it enough - but maybe the trick is to practice more going back and forth? Doing some sessions where you play Bb for 5 minutes then bass for 5 minutes etc - maybe that might help you find a good point of balance where you can get a sound you're happy with without pinching.

It might be a bit tricky for me to diagnose without being in the room with you, but if you wanted to post a video of yourself, even just playing some long tones in different registers, I could take a look and try?

Hi Heather, I'd also be very interested in bass clarinet stuff. I play German, but I find the differences particularly fascinating. I don't know if the same difficulties exist. I think B flat and bass are closer together here. Get well soon!

Hi Nora - I’ve never played a German system bass clarinet (I understand they are also extremely expensive compared to the French system ones and a lot of German system players learn French system bass for this reason) - but I imagine the challenges of switching back and forth are not so different…
